Brown Advisory Novices Chase
Brown Advisory Novices Chase
The Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase is better known to many as the RSA or Sun Alliance Chase, with RSA Insurance sponsoring the race from 1974 to 2020.
Originally the Broadway Novices’ Chase, its roll of honour is stacked with future stars, including Gold Cup winners such as Arkle, alongside Grand National hero Minnehoma. Run over just beyond three miles on the Old Course, it is often described as the “novice Gold Cup” and has long been a natural stepping stone to the blue riband event.
Lord Windermere was the most recent horse to complete the double, winning this race in 2013 before landing the Gold Cup in 2014, following in the footsteps of Denman and Bob’s Worth. Others have gone close, with Might Bite winning in 2017 before finishing second in the Gold Cup, while Minello Indo was runner-up here in 2020 before winning the Gold Cup a year later.
High-class form is usually essential. Recent winners had already shown graded ability, with the 2022 and 2023 winners both successful in the Dipper Novices’ Chase, while Fact To File, victorious in 2024, was runner-up in the Champion Bumper before going on to win the Ryanair Chase in 2025.
Willie Mullins has dominated the race in recent years, training seven winners — three more than Nicky Henderson.
