Kim Muir Handicap Chase
Kim Muir Handicap Chase
The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup is a handicap chase for amateur riders, often called the Kim Muir Chase. Originally the Kim Muir Memorial Cup, Fulke Walwyn’s name was added in 1991; he trained 40 Festival winners, including two in this race. The race has a 145 rating ceiling and is sponsored by the JRL Group.
It has produced several future Grand National stars: Ballabriggs (2010), Sunnyhillboy (2011), Cause of Causes (2016), and Any Second Now (2019). 2024 winner Inothewayurthinkin went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2025. Notably, HRH Prince Charles was unseated in the 1981 renewal.
Recent form isn’t essential; jockey bookings matter, with hold-up horses often favoured. Tongue-ties have featured on five of the last ten winners. Neither Willie Mullins nor Paul Nicholls has won, while Nicky Henderson’s last success was in 2005.
